The Green Button

Now you can download your electricity use data with the simple click of a button.

What is Green Button?

Through the "Green Button" you can quickly and easily download your electricity usage data through our secure My Account website.  The Green Button is in response to a challenge issued by the White House to give people timely access to their energy data with the click of a single button.  By using the Green Button:

  • You can download up to 13 months of your personal electricity usage data
  • Developers and third parties can receive electricity use data from customers in a machine-readable format

How do I download my Green Button data?

  1. Log into My Account (to register for My Account go here)
  2. Click on the My Energy tab at top
  3. Then click on  the Energy Charts link at the top of the list
  4. On your Energy Charts page click on the Green Button and select your download format

Information about the file formats

There are two options for file downloads:

The first option is a CSV (Comma Separated Value) file which you can use to review your usage and is a format you can read. Your data can be downloaded on any operating system that supports CSV.

The second option is an XML (Extensible Markup Language) file which is a machine readable format.

What can I do with my data

With your data you or a company of your choice can analyze your energy use patterns and determine the best ways for you to manage your use.  This information can also be used to help determine if a solar system can help you and what the proper size should be.

The OpenEI non-profit website maintains a list of currently active Green Button applications you can use.

Can other people download my data without my knowledge?

No. Your data can only be downloaded through the secured log-in to your information in My Account. You should not provide your My Account log-in information to anyone else.

How much data is in my file?

The file contains up to 13 months of Smart Meter energy usage data, for every hour or 15 minutes of every day. The information is for your electricity use only; no natural gas use is currently available.

Why does SDG&E want to provide this data?

With more information, you can make better choices on how you use energy and how you can save energy. With smart meters installed at most homes and businesses, many people have access to their energy usage data. The Green Button puts your energy usage information in a standardized file format for sharing. Access to this information is spurring the development of innovative consumer application and devices from third parties.
