6 Simple Steps to a More Efficient Office

  1. Look for ENERGY STAR®-qualified products. The ENERGY STAR mark indicates the most efficient computers, printers, copiers, refrigerators, televisions, windows, thermostats, ceiling fans, and other appliances and equipment.

  2. Turn off machines when they’re not in use. Automatically switching to sleep mode or manually turning monitors off is a better energy saving strategy than counting on your screen saver.

  3. To charge and power a laptop, put the AC adapter on a power strip that can be turned off.

  4. Consider buying a laptop for your next computer upgrade. Laptops use much less energy than desktop computers.

  5. Many appliances continue to draw a small amount of power when they are switched off. These "phantom" loads occur in most appliances that use electricity, such as monitors, copy machines, computers, and coffeemakers. Consider unplugging the appliance or using a power strip to cut all power to the appliance.

  6. Unplug cell phone chargers when the chargers are not in use.
