Get the Facts About Electric and Magnetic Fields
In recent years, everyone from scientists to everyday people haves started questioning if there’s a link between exposure to electric and magnetic fields (EMF) and serious health problems, including cancer. And no one is more concerned about it than all of us at SDG&E.
Scientific Studies and Reviews
Thousands of studies on this subject have been done throughout the world, with results inconclusive and hard to understand results. A number of internationally recognized scientific organizations and independent regulatory advisory groups have conducted scientific reviews of the EMF research literature.
Conclusions
Without exception, these major reviews have reported that the data do not demonstrate that exposure to power-frequency magnetic fields causes cancer or other health risks, although...
Radio Frequency Concerns for Smart Meter Products
The Itron OpenWay® technology and products chosen by SDG&E fully comply with U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) guidelines for human exposure to radio frequency (RF) energy. In addition, the FCC recently confirmed that current smart meter installations (including those for multiple meters at a site) comply with FCC radio frequency exposure limits. Smart meters operate in two ranges (bands) of frequencies*:
900 megahertz (MHz) band—slightly above those used by some of the cellular telephone carriers
2.4 gigahertz (GHz) band—the same range where WiFi and many cordless phones operate
These bands include the same FCC-approved frequencies that have been used for many years in other devices such as baby monitors, remote controlled toys and medical monitors.
