Emergency Load Reduction Program

With the Emergency Load Reduction Program (ELRP), eligible SDG&E® business customers can receive a financial incentive for voluntarily reducing energy use during a grid emergency.

Emergency Load Reduction

How It Works

During the hot summer months, increased demand for cooling can strain the electrical grid.  The Emergency Load Reduction Program was designed to allow business customers in SDG&E's service territory to voluntarily participate in energy-load reduction when the grid is especially stressed — and receive a financial incentive. Participation is entirely voluntary, and there is no penalty if your business chooses not to participate.

If your business enrolls in ELRP, you’ll choose an estimated target-energy-load-reduction quantity to be achieved during an event.

Program Season: The program runs from May through October.

Program Activations: An ELRP event can occur any day of the week, including consecutive days, weekends, and holidays, between the hours of 4 - 9 p.m. An event can last anywhere from one hour to five hours and will vary by subgroup. An ELRP event is triggered by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO).

Program Notifications: Notifications will be sent to the contact on file based on your participation, either on the day of or the day ahead of the event.

Program Incentives: Participants enrolled in the ELRP will receive a financial incentive of $2/kWh for verified load shed. Participation during an ELRP event is entirely voluntary, and no financial penalties will result from not meeting or exceeding a nominated target during the event. You will be paid for what you deliver. See official terms and conditions for more details.
