What Is the Home Energy Report Program?

Measuring and tracking usage helps customers better understand and manage their energy costs.

  • Home Energy Reports help customers understand their energy usage by using smart meter data to identify the individual appliance types within the home that are actually using the energy. Customers can review the detailed energy breakdown, along with tips for their top appliance categories, to make changes in their home to reduce energy usage and save money.
  • Customers can see how their energy usage compares with other similar homes based on a number of attributes when available:
    • Similar location
    • Home type
    • Home size
    • Home heating type
  • To improve the comparison, customers can complete their Home Profile Survey to share additional details about their home and appliances.

About the Similar Home Comparison

Similar Home Comparison is an insight that allows you to benchmark your energy usage against that of similar homes.

We determine similar homes to yours based on their geographic location, local climate, predicted heating type, and type and size of homes (if available) compared to your home. To improve the comparison, you can access your Home Profile Survey from the email to provide more home and appliance information.

While the homes included in your similar homes group provide a good indication of typical energy use for comparison, some factors can affect how your energy use stacks up against those homes. For example, if the number of people living in your home is greater than average, or if you have equipment such as a hot tub, swimming pool or multiple refrigerators, your energy use could be higher than your neighbors. You can provide additional information about your home by filling out your Home Profile Survey.

The most efficient households rely on a variety of energy-saving strategies. They may use a programmable thermostat to manage heating and cooling costs, turn off lights and electronics when not in use, wash laundry with cold water, and always run full loads in the dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer. The Home Energy Report provides you with your own strategies to help you make your home more efficient.

The square footage that we use for your Home Energy Report is based on public data about your home, which was collected from your county assessor's office or other public records. If the square footage on your report is missing or incorrect, you can update it online by taking the Home Profile Survey.
