Overview
The substation rebuild is part of SDG&E’s goal of upgrading our system so it helps meet the increasing demand for electricity in the City of San Diego. The substation project will modernize the equipment to meet the latest reliability standards.

Project Schedule

South Bay Substation Relocation Project
Project at a Glance
Construction at SDG&E’s South Bay Substation Relocation Project in Chula Vista continues, with much progress made over the past few months. Once the new substation is complete and energized, which is expected mid-2016, demolition of the company’s existing substation will begin. The South Bay Substation Relocation Project will enable SDG&E to replace an older substation with a new larger facility, that is equipped with state of the art technology to meet the growing energy demand of the area. Open public access to the Chula Vista bay front is another benefit of this project.

ECO Substation Reconstruction and Modernization Project
The completed reconstruction and modernization of the Boulevard substation, one of the key components of our ECO Substation project has been completed. The entire project includes a new 58-acre state-of-the art substation in the East County community of Jacumba, the upgraded substation in Boulevard and a 14-mile transmission line connecting the two substations. Both the substation as well as the new transmission line was put into service on Dec. 29, 2014.
Construction began in May 2013 and the new 500kV substation in Jacumba was completed a year later in June 2014.
The ECO Substation project interconnects with the existing 500 kV Southwest Powerlink transmission line, strengthening this part of the transmission system. The project is a vital reliability addition and will improve service to…

San Juan Capistrano
San Clemente
Unincorporated areas of Orange County.
The Project
Rebuild the substation in San Juan Capistrano that was last renovated in the 1950’s;
Upgrade the transmission lines from 69kV and 138kV to 230kV in order to provide the electric reliability needed today; and
Replace existing structures with taller new steel poles, which enhance safety and reliability.
